MONDAY: Today we finished our "sac-a-dos" projects, and students practiced reading it to a friend. This week, we will do about 10 mini presentations/day where students will read their work to the class. We are also working on describing ourselves physically, which will lead into our next unit "la famille".
Q: Tu as les cheveux de quel couleur? R: J'ai les cheveux bruns. TUESDAY: Today we continued with our sac-a-dos mini presentations. My heart absolutely exploded with happiness when a student said "I knew exactly how to read my French because I wrote it, then read it out loud afterwards!" YES!! This is what it is all about! We also continued building on the vocabulary needed to describe ourselves. We add the following question to our repertoire. Q: Tu as les yeux de quel couleur? R: J'ai les yeux bruns. WEDNESDAY: Today I challenge the students a bit. Last week we started to learn the question "qu'est-ce que tu as fait ce weekend" (what did you do this weekend). It is one of the first couple phrases students learn that help bring the understanding of past tense without standing in front of them and directly teaching the intricacies of the past tense in French (very different than the way I may have learned in school!). Building on that familiar structure, I asked the students: Q: Qu'est-ce que tu as fait hier soir? This evoked tons of great questions from students. Students are asked to try to answer all questions in full, french sentences. However, if they are lacking the necessary vocabulary (which is common when learning new phrases) they are allowed to ask "comment dit-on?". Some of the answers we heard, and therefore started to learn and infuse into our vocabulary were: R: Hier soir je suis allé à Vivo. R: Hier soir je suis allé à un match de football. R: Hier soir je suis allée à la bibliothèque. R: Hier soir j'ai mangé la pizza. R: Hier soir j'ai regardé Netflix. RL Hier soir j'ai relaxé à la maison. Students quickly came to understand the difference between "je suis allé" and "j'ai". THURSDAY: Today we had fun playing "Ellen" - we invite one special guest (a student) to the front of the class, and get to interview them by asking questions we are familiar with. This informal setting also allows students to ask how to say new, or less familiar questions to their peers! We also learned a couple new structures: Q: Dans ton opinion, qui est plus brave, Superman ou Hulk? R: Dans mon opinion, Superman est plus brave que Hulk. Q: Dans ton opinion, qui est plus drôle, The Rock ou Drew Carey. R; Dans mon opinion, Drew Carey est plus drôle que The Rock. FRIDAY: Our day was a bit short due to a library presentation, our PE time, and the invitation to watch the senior girls volleyball tournament in the gym...so we played a couple rounds of Ellen and continued to solidify our confidence with French questions and phrases.

MONDAY - Please make sure you ask your son/daughter about the "Sac-a-dos" rap we created. We have some talented students in the class with LOTS of creativity. I will plan to share this video with them on their google drive account. I challenged the students to see if the could respond to questions in the past tense and they AMAZED me with their abilities.to answer these questions with ease, and also recognize the different grammatical structures.
Q: Qu'est-ce que tu as fait ce weekend? R: Ce weekend je suis allé(e) à Vivo. Q: Qu'est ce qu'il y a dans ton sac-a-dos? R: Dans mon sac-a-dos il y a un crayon, une gomme et une règle. TUESDAY - Students are now able to read short paragraphs containing familiar topics. They are getting more and more confident each day! I am so proud of them. Together, we created a sample paragraph about the supplies in our backpacks. We talked about how to push ourselves to add more details to our writing, even in these beginning stages of learning. Students decided that by adding details around quantity and colors, they could demonstrate their understanding of the new vocabulary, and the vocabulary their acquired from Grade 4. They wrote their own paragraph about the supplies in their back packs. WEDNESDAY - Today we added sentences to our word wall. In Intensive French, we don't write single words without a context...always in sentence form, and sentences that are generated from students in the class to ensure the learning is authentic. Students also reviewed their rough copies of their writing from yesterday. They are able to read their own paragraphs, and with some prompting can recognize where the errors are (typically errors around forgetting the "s" on plural words) and are able to correct these mistakes. Once the rough copies were reviewed they started on their good copies. We will finish these off tomorrow and glue them into our visual journals. The students are so proud of their work, one student told me he couldn't wait to show his parents his work. I will try to post some pictures later this week. THURSDAY - FRIDAY - No school MONDAY - today we learned how to introduce ourselves, say our name and our age. We also began learning about how to talk about our preferences, specifically our favorite restaurant. To practice asking and answering questions, we played a game I called "speed dating" - we have an inner circle and an outer circle. The inner circle asks the question and the outer circle answers. This allows students to have authentic and real-time practice. The growth in students' confidence and abilities was noticed immediately.
Q: Comment t'appelles-tu? Q: Quel age as tu? Q: Quel est ton restaurant préféré? TUESDAY - we continued to build on our vocabulary today. Students are even reading small paragraphs about the sentences they have learned. Students surveyed each other about their favorite sport, restaurant or movie. Q; C'est quand ton anniversaire? Q: Quel est ton film préféré? Q: Quel est ton sport préféré? WEDNESDAY - we learned some more phrases today and put our data from yesterday into a graph to represent the findings. We are also already starting to work on the past tense with some of our questions. Q: Quelle est la data aujourd'hui? Q: Quelle était la date hier? THURSDAY - students are enjoying talking about the weather (even though it is cold!!). They are building confidence in their abilities and are seeing success. Today we brought in some future verb tenses when talking about the date and students picked it up quickly. We also started learning (or refreshing our memory) on basic school supplies. We listened to a rap about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdo69O2B2c4 We have a goal to create our own music video to go along with this. |
