INFO FOR Tuesday June 11th - 5A students, please use this link to connect you to the many different flyers in Calgary. These will help you create a grocery list with prices for the food items, as well as the party decorations. Use the budget tracking sheets provided in class to help organize this work. REMEMBER if you buys 3 bags of chips for $1.99 each, you will need to add the total in your tracking sheet as well.
https://www.redflagdeals.com/in/calgary/flyers/ ** If you can't find what you are looking for here, you can look at stores individually...but this link has all the prices of items you can imagine. If you get stuck on pricing for something VERY SPECIFIC, write it down and put a star beside it - we can chat when I am back at school. Have fun!

Students learned about rotation, reflection and translation. They demonstrated their knowledge of these concepts through tessellation art. Take a peak!
Students did a FANTASTIC JOB with their zoo projects. They were able to calculate area, perimeter and volume for their animals. On top of that, they worked with scale and sized down their zoo to something more manageable in size. Students were so invested in the learning process!
Students can expect to have their zoos marked by Wednesday and can bring them home at that time. In the month of June, we will be finishing up some work around shapes and space and then will move through looping in content we have already covered. The thought behind this is that students will get the chance to practice some foundation skills again! I will do my best to keep the blog updated at this time so you know what we are up to! Students will be working on their zoo projects this week. On Thursday we will be doing a gallery walk with the other Grade 5 classes. Stay tuned for some pictures.
We are building a zoo!!
Students are working through a complex task design and building a zoo. Some chose to work in similar math ability groups, while other students chose to work alone. Students have to take the are required for an animal, double or triple the number (so that all animals have a buddy), and then determined the measurements of each enclosure in order to calculate the perimeter. Students also needed to decide if their animals needed a 3D enclosure - something like an eagle would need a roof so that it doesn't fly away...but tigers may only need a very tall wall. Once the preliminary work is done, students will create the blueprint of their zoo on a much smaller scale than what they calculated. Stay tuned for some pictures. Click here to see the zoo assignment: About the project Animal sizes Checklist We made paper airplanes this week!!
Student designed paper airplanes, and tested them 5 times. Each time, they measured the distance they travelled in meters, and converted the units into cm and mm as well. After 5 tests, students had the chance to modify their airplane models. After the changes and modifications were made, students re-tested and measured another 5 times. They graphed their findings in a double bar graph to show the data in a clear way. HOMEWORK! Click here to complete a homework review sheet from the concepts covered this week! MONDAY - We completed a Kahoot today to review the different shapes we learned about in our flapbooks.
TUESDAY - Students listened to oral instructions and had to draw out and design difference shapes, with different dimensions, based on the instructions given. This was a challenging task for students. WEDNESDAY - Students worked with a partner to read written instructions that would eventually create an image. This tested their ability to work collaborative with a partner, read through instructions, and follow through with drawing the correct shapes. THURSDAY - Students completed a similar project to yesterday. They were encouraged to do so individually. This will be marked and inputted onto PowerSchool over the weekend. FRIDAY - Due to the limited access to laptops next week, due to PATs, we didn't have Math today to allow for as much time as possible to continue with our Writing Bootcamp. MONDAY - no school
TUESDAY - students were given 36 snap cubes and had to see the different 3D shapes that could be created with the same volume. This helped students see that even though the volume was the same for everyone, that based on the design the surface area, and perimeter of each face could vary. We repeated this task with 24 cubes. WEDNESDAY - students designed 3D shapes with snap cubes and found the perimeter and surface each face of the shape. They even were able to draw it in 2D. THURSDAY - as a class we determined ways to help use classify and remember different shapes: squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and rhombuses. FRIDAY - created and finished flap books to help remember math vocabulary. MONDAY - Students used geo-boards to talk about different quadrilaterals and the shapes they can create. We talked about the difference between squares and rectangles.
TUESDAY - Students talked about perimeter, and applied their understanding to calculate the perimeter of quadrilaterals and other shapes. WEDNESDAY - Students used snap cubes to begin to understand surface area and how it relates to volume. We had a great "math talk" about some of the bigger ideas revolving around area, perimeter and volume. This is foundational to students' understanding of upcoming concepts and theories. THURSDAY - Students created "geo-monsters" to demonstrate their understanding of measurement, area and perimeter. FRIDAY - no school MONDAY - Quiz today! Marks are now on PowerSchool. If students would like to re-do the test they need to advocate for their learning to talk to Ms Malayko about it.
TUESDAY - Students started the measurement unit today. They had a Math Talk about places and professions where people use measurement, when to estimate vs when to use exact measurements, and also talked about referents. They then did an activity to practice estimating measurements, and then finding the exact answer. Students also compared their estimations and exact answers. WEDNESDAY - Students continued with the work from yesterday. THURSDAY - Students utilized today's math to catch up on missing French assignments. Some were able to get finished quickly and went on Mathletics. FRIDAY - Due to two special guests, we did not have math today. |
