Please make sure you have a conversation with your child about our afternoon at the animation studio. The students loved it! We will go back next Thursday (November 8th) for our culminating activity. Here are some pictures.
We will be working on a design task as a concluding activity for a book we are reading in French. In preparation, if you have any recyclable materials at home that you would like to get rid of (or donate to our learning), please send them to school with your son/daughter.
They will be designing and building a roller coaster on November 8th. A couple updates and reminders about Halloween:
- no masks, weapons or violent materials - school appropriate costumes IN THE MORNING: Regular classes AT LUNCH: There will be a photo booth set up in the conference room (near the main foyer) where students can take pictures with their friends. Leadership students will be running this event, and I have been notified there are costumes for the best dressed. IN THE AFTERNOON: The IF students will be rotating through different classrooms to participate in different Halloween-type activities. Our school is fortunate enough to have an artist in residency starting this week...and the Grade 4s and 5s are the first to check it out!
Students will create a short animation sequence. Our first day to check out all things animation will be on October 31st. Students will check out the equipment, learn some of the basic functions and begin designing their mini animation. More information about the portable animation studio can be found here: http://quickdrawanimation.ca/paw/ A quick message from parent council...click here to read the letter to find out how your purchases from Cobb's bread can support our school.
Hello Parents and Guardians -
As a part of our Remembrance Day assembly, we are looking for pictures of family members who have served in the war. If you would like to contribute an image, please email it to me ([email protected]) with a brief description of their role. Thank you. On Thursday, October 25th, the Green Team is having a car free day. We are encouraging all students to find an alternative way to school that day (walk, bike, scooter). We have also set up 6 drop zones around the community. A map attached or see below Oct25_Drop_Zones.jpg .
Drop Zones: 1. If you choose to drop the student at one of the 6 drop zones (see below or attached map), please note the time as the group will be leaving ON TIME. 2. There will be teachers at each drop zone waiting to walk with the students. They will walk with them to school and back to the same drop zone after school. 3. Students will be responsible for finding the same teacher after school. Teachers will meet students outside at the front doors. Teachers will not be taking attendance and will be leaving to the same drop zone at 3:10. Drop Zone 1: Starbucks parking lot (130 Country Hills Rd NE) Distance to school: 1.2 km Leaving at 7:45 (about a 20 minute walk) Drop Zone 2: Coventry Hills Drive NE and Covehaven Link (the traffic circle west of School) Distance to School: 550m Leaving at 7:50 (about a 10 minute walk) Drop Zone 3: Covemeadow Road and Covemeadow Road NE (near the small park North of school) Distance to school: 500m Leaving at 7:50 (less than 10 minutes) Drop Zone 4: Covepark Drive NE and Coventry Hills Way Distance to School: 850m Leaving at 7:45 (15 – 20 minute walk) Drop Zone 5: Coventry Drive Ne and Coventry Hills Way Distance to School: 1.5 km Leaving at 7:40 (30 minute walk) Drop Zone 6: Coventry Way NE and Coventry View NE (first road east of Coventry Hills Blvd) Distance to School: 1.0 km Leaving at 7:45 (15 minute walk) Why are we doing this? We are hoping to encourage more students to green commute to increase safety for pedestrians and drivers as well as to save energy! Today we visited Vivo Pond. Students sketched their surroundings, and also continued with their soundscapes. It was interesting to have a conversation about some of the differences they noticed. Mr. Gordon also gave a great lesson on double and triple bar graphs to both the Grade 5s and 9s. Students were able to take that learning and implement it right away as a way to chart the same type of data from three different locations. Our Grade 9 buddies were a great help for us as we learned this new concept.
Tuesday students continued testing the water samples. They also were given specific scenarios to try to find ways to meet the ideal pH levels in the water to help a specific species survive, and created "recipes" to adjust the levels. With their grade 9 buddy, they created an infomercial to convince the city to buy their recipe.
