Monday - students were introduced to the division algorithm today! See picture below of a breakdown of how we do things in Grade 5. This does look different than how most parents have learned long division - it really helps break the number down for students into small, more manageable chunks.
Tuesday - no Math due to French movie Field trip Wednesday - More division practice and students completed a complex problem solving task where they needed to design a dice that matched specific criteria. It was challenging, but they persevered..

MONDAY - Students got their one day a week period to use Mathletics today. They should be and are encouraged to use this program at home during the month of March.
TUESDAY - ** please note, marks from the mid-point check-in from last week are now up on PowerSchool. Today we talked about how knowing that 56 / 8 = 7 can help us solve problems like 560 / 8 and even 564 / 8. Students worked through some questions using a white board and then did some pencil/paper practice work. Some students still aren't confident enough with their multiplication tables and are therefore using multiplication grids to help support their ability to complete division questions. WEDNESDAY - Today students worked on dividing up images to answer the question "how many __would be in a group of 3/4/5 etc". This was an area of growth needed based on the mid-point math check in. Students also worked on using their mental math skills from yesterday to estimate the quotient of division questions. THURSDAY - Students continued to work on their "groups of" questions. FRIDAY - Students worked on some mental math strategies. Next week, we will work through the traditional algorithm when it comes to division. Please note, I will be posting some pictures and instructions about how to do this - in case you would like to support your child at home. ARE YOU READY FOR MATHLETICS MARCH MATHNESS?!?! Math checkStarting on Monday March 4th, students will be given an access code and login information for one month of Mathletics!! We will play it once a week in class, and students are encouraged (please please please) to play it at home too. Mathletics is an online math program that supports learning of the Grade 5 Alberta Math Curriculum. They are putting on a challenge/competition called "March Mathness". Students can accumulate points for their school and even win prizes for our school.
MONDAY - Students were introduced to Mahletics today. They should all have their access code and password by now. TUESDAY - Students were introduced to some mental math strategies to help with division today. We scaffolded the learning to support overall understanding. We will touch on this again next week too! WEDNESDAY - today we practiced some questions that helped us identify areas of growth within the Math unit. We will work further on these questions next week. Students will need to practice different ways to interpret images and how to divide items amongst a certain number of people. THURSDAY - division and chance/probability check-in. FRIDAY - we worked hard in HUM today and didn't get to a ton of Math. We did practice our basic facts using dice. This is something students can easily do at home to practice their math skills. |
