We are building a zoo!!
Students are working through a complex task design and building a zoo. Some chose to work in similar math ability groups, while other students chose to work alone. Students have to take the are required for an animal, double or triple the number (so that all animals have a buddy), and then determined the measurements of each enclosure in order to calculate the perimeter. Students also needed to decide if their animals needed a 3D enclosure - something like an eagle would need a roof so that it doesn't fly away...but tigers may only need a very tall wall. Once the preliminary work is done, students will create the blueprint of their zoo on a much smaller scale than what they calculated. Stay tuned for some pictures. Student designed paper airplanes, and tested them 5 times. Each time, they measured the distance they travelled in meters, and converted the units into cm and mm as well. After 5 tests, students had the chance to modify their airplane models. After the changes and modifications were made, students re-tested and measured another 5 times. They graphed their findings in a double bar graph to show the data in a clear way. HOMEWORK! Click here to complete a homework review sheet from the concepts covered this week! MONDAY - We completed a Kahoot today to review the different shapes we learned about in our flapbooks.
TUESDAY - Students listened to oral instructions and had to draw out and design difference shapes, with different dimensions, based on the instructions given. This was a challenging task for students. WEDNESDAY - Students worked with a partner to read written instructions that would eventually create an image. This tested their ability to work collaborative with a partner, read through instructions, and follow through with drawing the correct shapes. THURSDAY - Students completed a similar project to yesterday. They were encouraged to do so individually. This will be marked and inputted onto PowerSchool over the weekend. FRIDAY - Due to the limited access to laptops next week, due to PATs, we didn't have Math today to allow for as much time as possible to continue with our Writing Bootcamp. |
