MONDAY - no school
TUESDAY - students were given 36 snap cubes and had to see the different 3D shapes that could be created with the same volume. This helped students see that even though the volume was the same for everyone, that based on the design the surface area, and perimeter of each face could vary. We repeated this task with 24 cubes. WEDNESDAY - students designed 3D shapes with snap cubes and found the perimeter and surface each face of the shape. They even were able to draw it in 2D. THURSDAY - as a class we determined ways to help use classify and remember different shapes: squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and rhombuses. FRIDAY - created and finished flap books to help remember math vocabulary.

MONDAY - Students used geo-boards to talk about different quadrilaterals and the shapes they can create. We talked about the difference between squares and rectangles.
TUESDAY - Students talked about perimeter, and applied their understanding to calculate the perimeter of quadrilaterals and other shapes. WEDNESDAY - Students used snap cubes to begin to understand surface area and how it relates to volume. We had a great "math talk" about some of the bigger ideas revolving around area, perimeter and volume. This is foundational to students' understanding of upcoming concepts and theories. THURSDAY - Students created "geo-monsters" to demonstrate their understanding of measurement, area and perimeter. FRIDAY - no school MONDAY - Quiz today! Marks are now on PowerSchool. If students would like to re-do the test they need to advocate for their learning to talk to Ms Malayko about it.
TUESDAY - Students started the measurement unit today. They had a Math Talk about places and professions where people use measurement, when to estimate vs when to use exact measurements, and also talked about referents. They then did an activity to practice estimating measurements, and then finding the exact answer. Students also compared their estimations and exact answers. WEDNESDAY - Students continued with the work from yesterday. THURSDAY - Students utilized today's math to catch up on missing French assignments. Some were able to get finished quickly and went on Mathletics. FRIDAY - Due to two special guests, we did not have math today. MONDAY - Today we completed 3 word problems that covered Math concepts we have already touched on throughout the year. These have been assessed and entered into PowerSchool. It was a good reminder for students that even though addition and subtraction are "over" they will still encounter projects and questions that require those skills. We also continued to review division.
TUESDAY - We did some whiteboard math practice today on vertical spaces, and then in small groups, students worked through some questions on paper. We did 3 more word problems today, but they were only marked for feedback vs marks. WEDNESDAY - Students did a "low stakes math quiz" today to check in on their understanding of division. This will be assessed and entered into PowerSchool, and will serve as a study tool for the upcoming test on Monday April 8th. THURSDAY - Click here for a review booklet for the test on Monday.
