MONDAY - Today we completed 3 word problems that covered Math concepts we have already touched on throughout the year. These have been assessed and entered into PowerSchool. It was a good reminder for students that even though addition and subtraction are "over" they will still encounter projects and questions that require those skills. We also continued to review division.
TUESDAY - We did some whiteboard math practice today on vertical spaces, and then in small groups, students worked through some questions on paper. We did 3 more word problems today, but they were only marked for feedback vs marks. WEDNESDAY - Students did a "low stakes math quiz" today to check in on their understanding of division. This will be assessed and entered into PowerSchool, and will serve as a study tool for the upcoming test on Monday April 8th. THURSDAY - Click here for a review booklet for the test on Monday. FRIDAY -

Monday - students were introduced to the division algorithm today! See picture below of a breakdown of how we do things in Grade 5. This does look different than how most parents have learned long division - it really helps break the number down for students into small, more manageable chunks.
Tuesday - no Math due to French movie Field trip Wednesday - More division practice and students completed a complex problem solving task where they needed to design a dice that matched specific criteria. It was challenging, but they persevered.. MONDAY - Students got their one day a week period to use Mathletics today. They should be and are encouraged to use this program at home during the month of March.
TUESDAY - ** please note, marks from the mid-point check-in from last week are now up on PowerSchool. Today we talked about how knowing that 56 / 8 = 7 can help us solve problems like 560 / 8 and even 564 / 8. Students worked through some questions using a white board and then did some pencil/paper practice work. Some students still aren't confident enough with their multiplication tables and are therefore using multiplication grids to help support their ability to complete division questions. WEDNESDAY - Today students worked on dividing up images to answer the question "how many __would be in a group of 3/4/5 etc". This was an area of growth needed based on the mid-point math check in. Students also worked on using their mental math skills from yesterday to estimate the quotient of division questions. THURSDAY - Students continued to work on their "groups of" questions. FRIDAY - Students worked on some mental math strategies. Next week, we will work through the traditional algorithm when it comes to division. Please note, I will be posting some pictures and instructions about how to do this - in case you would like to support your child at home. ARE YOU READY FOR MATHLETICS MARCH MATHNESS?!?! Math checkStarting on Monday March 4th, students will be given an access code and login information for one month of Mathletics!! We will play it once a week in class, and students are encouraged (please please please) to play it at home too. Mathletics is an online math program that supports learning of the Grade 5 Alberta Math Curriculum. They are putting on a challenge/competition called "March Mathness". Students can accumulate points for their school and even win prizes for our school.
MONDAY - Students were introduced to Mahletics today. They should all have their access code and password by now. TUESDAY - Students were introduced to some mental math strategies to help with division today. We scaffolded the learning to support overall understanding. We will touch on this again next week too! WEDNESDAY - today we practiced some questions that helped us identify areas of growth within the Math unit. We will work further on these questions next week. Students will need to practice different ways to interpret images and how to divide items amongst a certain number of people. THURSDAY - division and chance/probability check-in. FRIDAY - we worked hard in HUM today and didn't get to a ton of Math. We did practice our basic facts using dice. This is something students can easily do at home to practice their math skills. MONDAY - Today students did a spatial awareness task where they needed to use logic and reasoning to build a skyscraper building out of blocks. Students interpreted the questions and information really well and were able to work with a partner to see success in the task.
TUESDAY - Today was a shorter day for us when it came to Math so we worked in pairs and played some dice game to work on our basic multiplication fact recall. I have stressed the importance of memorizing basic multiplication facts up to 9x9 to the students and have highlighted how it is linked to division. Understanding and this recall will help students HUGELY in division. WEDNESDAY - Be Brave Hitmen Game THURSDAY - Today we did some mental math, and boy was I proud a the success the students saw. We started small and talked about how 21 / 7 = 3, and that 210 / 7 = 30. Students practiced this concept to build understanding and see patterns that emerged. Then, we took it one step further. We did 215 / 7 = 30 5/7. Students rarely, if ever, respond using a remainder (R: 5).We had a great conversation around how using a fraction to represent the remainder will provide us with a more exact answer, which will be helpful as we progress into our Math learning in high Grades. Students worked on some practice questions to develop their overall understanding and confidence with this topic. All questions today were done using MENTAL MATH, and I have not yet taught the traditional algorithm for division. When I do, please be advised that I will post the two strategies students can use in class so that you are able to support from home if/as needed. FRIDAY - No school HOMEWORK - click the links below to find this week's homework. Students MUST be completing this to help support their classroom learning.
HW1 HW2 HM3 MONDAY - no school TUESDAY - we worked on division through the use of rulers and number lines (see picture below). Although we will eventually get to the standard algorithm, we have started with a conceptual understanding of division. WEDNESDAY - today we talked a lot about probability and chance. Students reviewed the vocabulary and wrote chance sentences to share with their classmates. THURSDAY - Thursday Morning Math Routine with Mr. Logan. Click here for problem #1. If you have time, click here for problem #2. Thanks! FRIDAY - we continued working on the Logic Problems from yesterday. Students worked with a partner to read through and rationalize their answers. MONDAY - Students took part in an interesting lesson about division. We used rulers to facilitate a different approach to division. We started small, for example 14/2. Students were able to skip count to find their answer. After practicing it a couple of times we made it a bit more complicated. For example 17/3. Students were able to find the exact answer using FRACTIONS (see, I told them fractions would come back into play!)! Students saw great success. We will continue to build on this idea.
TUESDAY - Mr. Arvaluk led us in a lesson about chance and probability today. in Grade 5 we explore the terms: very likely, equally likely, unlikely and certain to express the chance of an event occurring. Be sure to ask your son or daughter about this activity! WEDNESDAY - We continued to explore division today through student created word problems. THURSDAY - no school FRIDAY - no school Click here for the practice and review sheet for the FRACTION TEST coming up this week - Feb 7th.
This week during FLEX we will be doing a FRACTION FAIR!! We are super excited to introduce this real-life application of fractions to students. Students will get to work with all Grade 5 teachers and explore fractions in other ways: games, photography, recipes, money, music and art! It should be really fun!!! MONDAY - Today we reviewed some fraction word problems. Students worked in partners to read, understand and solve the problems. They did really well, and gained some confidence moving into Thursday's test. TUESDAY - Today we did our division, probability and chance diagnostic test. Students know this is a way for me to check-in and see what they know about division before we even start learning about it together as a class. This never counts for marks, but guides my teaching. WEDNESDAY - We did a fraction test review period today! THURSDAY - Fraction Test - you've got this 5A!!!! FRIDAY - We started talking about division on a very simple and conceptual understanding. Our math talk revolved around what is division and "de-bunking" some of the challenges with division. We also made a connection to division and fractions. MONDAY - Students worked on some fraction focused work on Prodigy today! This is something they can continue with at home to solidify the learning in class.
TUESDAY - Students worked on ordering fractions and decimals. We talked a little bit about percentages and how they are related to some of the work we are doing with fractions. It was good to see students make a connection between the topics. WEDNESDAY - We did a mini-low stakes test today in math. This is something we will continue doing throughout the year. It helps prepare students for some of the more high-stakes tests without the natural anxiety that is associated with it. We also looked at equivalent fractions. THURSDAY - Today we continued prepping for the test next week. Students worked through set-models and ordering fractions on a number line - this seems to be a tricky concept for students! We are getting there though :) FRIDAY - no school! HOMEWORK - students will receive a copy of this homework on Wednesday, but it is on the blog as well if you'd like to access it sooner.
Around the Block Bump Four in a Row Uncover it! Race to the Finish POW 1 POW 2 MONDAY - Students completed their mid-point fractions assessment today. You can expect to see these marks on PowerSchool tomorrow evening. It is important to note this is only a snap shot of their learning right now. We will continue to work on and practice aspects of fractions, and students can expect to complete the final test, and a learning task before family day weekend in term 2. We also played a game that revolved around adding decimals to get the closest possible amount of "money" up to $1. Be sure to ask your son/daughter about this. They LOVED the game. You can also expect problem solving marks to be up on PowerSchool. Students worked through a variety of word problems last week. They have been assessed, and the marks are now on PowerSchool. TUESDAY - Students received their mid-point test back. We went through the questions together and students identified areas of growth for themselves, and then independently completed some practice questions to target their needs. We will continue this throughout the week. Mid-point assessment marks are now up on PowerSchool. WEDNESDAY - Students did some practice questions in class today about ordering fractions and decimals. THURSDAY - I was away doing French Interviews at Elboya today. Students worked through some word problems and fraction practice. FRIDAY - Students focused a lot of French today. We will go over the Math work from yesterday next week! |
